“Silent Jack” Album / Poster Design

Well, I just have to say, being a freelance illustrator – it helps having friends who both encourage and commission me on a regular basis! Especially those in quite popular bands – referring back particularly to the Alestorm commission I got last year which you can read all about here: https://abbiestabby.wordpress.com/2012/09/20/alestorm-gotta-drink-em-all-t-shirt/.

I’ve been asked to do poster work for different bands of all sorts of different genres before, so it’s always fun to see what ideas people have, and try to work with them in order to create some magic. In this instance, a very good mate of mine, Mr. Rich “Stitch” Mason of the immensely popular band “Silent Jack” (https://www.facebook.com/silentjackband), requested some potential poster and album artwork.

The brief which he gave me was simple enough: A nude angel, on a white silk bed, an ambiguous look of sadness / hope on her face and a tear in her eye. After relaying emails back and forth to each other when trying to think of the name of the style he wanted, I suggested a sort of “Pre-Raphaelite” look, and he responded with “Aye! That’s the one!”. Referring to the commonplace images of angels depicted by the Pre-Raphaelite artists, I tried to produce a piece in that direction, but with a bit of a modern twist.

I sent Rich each step of progress – from sketch, to fleshing out, to full colour – so that there were options available to him to offer any criticisms or ask for any changes. Only having a very cheap scanner at hand, which actually washed out most of the quality of the images when I tried scanning them in, I photographed each version and sent it via Facebook.

The colouring materials I used to complete this picture were Derwent artists colour pencils. My brother had actually bought me a set of flesh-tones from this brand which have turned out to be an incredible asset to my utensils. I have created some of my best pieces to date with these pencils.

Once I got the “okay” from Rich, I emailed a higher resolution version of the finished drawing to him. The next step was to wait for he and the rest of the band to fiddle about with it and edit it onto the final poster design. A day later, I got an email with this nifty piece of work attached to it:

Another few days after receiving that, they released the final tour poster which they will be releasing online and around the cities which they will be playing in the next month. A top bunch of lads which were a delight to work with. Earned myself one or two passes to some afterparties after doing this too, which is always nice! Haha!

Spring Awakening Collaboration

It has certainly been a bust Summer for me already! During the past two-and-a-half months since I’ve broken up from University, it has been non-stop requests and commission work from various people and businesses. It has been really nice (albeit a little bit hectic) being so in demand! This isall quite new to me – but either way, I am absolutely loving this creative streak, and I’m getting so much portfolio work done because of it.

After I had completed the t-shirt commission for James Ramon Baker (director and starring role in the local production of “Spring Awakening”), and seeing my work debuted in a professional setting, I was asked to contribute more towards this theatre production. James commissioned me to create an individual drawing of each of the actors / characters in the musical. These would go towards being put on an album cover for the cast recording (which is available for purchase now from Hull Truck Theatre).

As well as being grouped together on the cover, each individual character has been put on individual pages in the inside booklet. In total, there were 16 individual characetrs drawn for the cover (one character had to be re-drawn due to an innacuracy in the costume). Each character was drawn separately, and edited together for the full group image using editing software. They were drawn up and coloured using my standard tools:

  • Mechanical Pencil
  • 0.8 Pigment Ink Fineliner
  • Copic Markers

Hope you enjoy those little doodles! Thanks to those being commissioned, I’ve gotten many more requests since! One of my payments for doing this project for “Spring Awakening”, was free entry to the local production of “Footloose” – which was equally as amazing! Anyway, I’ll keep you all updated on the projects I participate in in the coming weeks! For now, enjoy a preview of the cast recording! If you like it, please don’t hesitate to buy a copy!

“Spring Awakening” Tshirt Commission

Referring back to my previous post on “Spring Awakening” (“Spring Awakening” @ Hull Truck Theatre), I was commissioned by the lead actor (and director) of the production, to create a tshirt design for him, which he intended to use in the final performance of the show. I have since been commissioned again by James Ramon-Baker to create several designs for a potential CD cover, for the “Cast Recording” Album which will be released soon.

He had previously asked me to create the tshirt design, but the intention to use it in one of the performances was decided upon after I had actually finished making it. It was created as a one-off use piece (as I did not have any access to decent fabric pens at the time) with Crayola felt-tips purchased at Tesco. He stated that he wanted the title of the production on the tshirt, with a “Chibi-esque” portrait of his character on the front, surrounding red font saying “Blah” multiple times, and the phrase “Totally Fu**ed” scrawled across the back (in reference to one of the songs). James supplied the tshirt for the project, free of charge.

I say “Chibi-esque”, as my stylised form of caricature has roots in the “Japanese Manga” style. The style was originally similar to the generic sort of “Chibi” look, but has since evolved into my own aesthetic over time – for example, the large, empty, white eyes. The design of these stylised portraits has, over recent months, proved very popular with people in the local alternative community, and various people and projects as far as Nottingham and Sheffield. This has made me immensely proud, and I am looking forward to other collaborations and ventures using them in the days and months to come!
