Movember Doodle Sheet

This is the page in my sketchbook on which I did my original doodles at the beginning of the Movember project. I was originally going to have a full face in the animation, but I then decided against it, because having the bottom half of the face meant that the moustaches were more of the main focus.

From creating this page, I was able to narrow down my choice of facial hair which would end up being used in the final animated video. The expression on the characters face was going to be part of the animation too. I was going to have it where his facial expressions would change depending on which moustache popped onto his face, but never got round to doing that part of the animation properly.

Original Betty Sketches

Here are a group of original sketches I did of Betty in my University sketchbook. As you can see, the style hasn’t changed all that much from the initial doodles, but you can say that it has gotten slightly less cartoon-like. I wanted to originally do it as a head and shoulders image, because you would end up seeing more expression in the face. This would also lessen the amount of animation on hand gestures too (an animation test which I will be doing soon), as there would be no need to draw out the entire arm – just the hands. Apologies for the poor quality of the scan!

Lip Sync Frames (with Texture)

I finally managed to put together some textured lip sync frames, using the screwed up paper textures which I scanned in previously. I’m going to do a test animation using them, so I can see as to whether it works or not, and if I have to make more to make it look a bit more fluent. I altered the transparency on the images of betty just so that you could see the textures more clearly. I used the phonetic lip sync frames layered over the paper images. I’m thinking of converting to traditional art for some of the frames, or for a test, just because it would be interesting to look at.

Basic Diagram of Betty

A while back in my sketchbook I did a rough Copic Marker coloured doodle of Betty. This was so that I could work out which colour scheme would suit her in the video. She tends to wear very pale, pastel colours anyway, which seems to be synonymous with many old peoples dress sense.

I used what she was wearing in the “A Chat with Grandma Betty” video I uploaded a while back as a reference point. I added a purple tone to the skin, as it makes her look quite aged, and purple is a necessary skin tone anyway (it took me years to start accepting purple as a viable skin colour!). It was outlined using a pigment ink outliner, and the notes were written out using a standard biro pen.

Revised Grandma Betty Lip Sync Images

After playing about with the full alphabet for the lip sync frames in a test animation, a fellow classmate and I discussed and came to the conclusion that keeping the frames to a bare minimum would be much more time effective. I looked at other animators lip sync sheets and charts (found on and about the internet) and took reference from them when narrowing down the amount of frames I used.
