Thought Bubble Festival 2012

Through finding out about THOUGHT BUBBLE FESTIVAL (http://thoughtbubblefestival.com/) from my tutor Gareth Sleighholme (http://apopheniainc.wordpress.com/), I decided to go along and attend what was to be my first proper comic convention / expo. Originally, the aspect which clinched it for me, was the fact that the writer and artist behind my favorite web comic: ROMANTICALLY APOCALYPTIC (http://romanticallyapocalyptic.com/), Vitaly S Alexius, was going to have an artists table there.

So, with that on the cards, I decided to throw together a costume, comprising of what I could gather together on a student budget, and headed to Leeds on the 17th of November. As for the event itself, it turned out to be even more than I anticipated. I assumed it would be a relatively small gathering of enthusiasts and cosplayers (this assumption comes from only ever attending TOKYOPOP’s ReCon events which used to be held at Waterstones).

Walking to the Royal Armouries from the car, my expectations were drastically challenged. Hundreds upon hundreds of avid comic and manga fans were dressed to the nines in an all manner of elaborate costumes. Most surprisingly, was the wide spectrum of outfits – some being of classic characters, some being of the manga genre / graphic novel genre, film, TV, and more interestingly, independant web comic characters. I only wish I had taken the initiative to ask more people for photos!

Three Jokers, Harley Quinn, and a Batman!

Ezio, Homestuck characters, Reno, and an Army Man.

Light, The Mad Hatter, Alois Trancy, and Haruhi Suzimiya.

A Roller Derby girl, and Captain Hook.
Doctor Who and Amy Pond.

Have to say a really massive thankyou to my lovely friend Annis who was also attending the event with her friends. I bumped into her as soon as I arrived, and she managed to get a few really good shots of me in my costume – which actually manage to make it look much better than it actually was!

Here is the absolutely amazing moment in which I got to meet the guy who models for the ROMATICALLY APOCALYPTIC character: Snippy. I was somewhat gutted that the actual artist could not make it to the event in the end, but nontheless, meeting “Oggy” was lovely – what a nice gentleman!

As soon as he saw me in my costume, as the main character “Zee Captain”, he immediately took a photo and tweeted it – and it managed to get a fairly good reception from other fans and followers (which you can see here):

I would have to say that all around, people at the convention generally quite liked my costume. It was pretty surprising, granted that it wasn’t the best that it could’ve been, had I been given more time and money. I want to refine this costume a bit, give it a little tune up with certain apparel, so that the next convention I go to will see me looking fabulous. It goes without saying, that I definitely have to purchase a gasmask in order to complete the ensemble.

Walking around the con, I saw two other people dressed as Zee Captain – which filled me with a certain amount of giddiness. I suppose conventions are really one of the only places where it is socially accpetable to turn up in the same outfit as someone else, haha! I only managed to get a photo with one of the other Captains, but even so, both of them were nice enough people to have a bit of banter with me!

There were all sorts of fascinating and crazy people there, who were all imcredibly friendly! What a nice crowd! Everyone who asked for a photo with was really receptive about the idea! I probably think that my favorite was the “FemJoker” that I bumped into towards the end of the day. Her outfit was amazing – when I first saw her I was genuinely a bit gender confused (until I managed to get up close, and heard her speak!).

Me and The FemJoker.

Me and Caboose (Red VS Blue).

Me and Judge Dredd.

Being the shameless merch fiend that I am, I just had to buy some goodies for myself whilst I was there. I found so many new comics and artists that I now absolutely adore! Perhaps the best discovery which I made during the first hour or so of the convention, was the fledgeling comic series “Ladies & Gentlemen” by Colver and Worth (also known as Water Closer Press).

I was browsing their stall and they asked if I was actually able to see through the goggles on my outfit. Upon taking them off they were a bit baffled about what I actually looked like…so they gave me a free copy of their comic! I was ecstatic! The artwork is lush, and it has some really good humor throughout the pages – and a few really good original concepts too! So, now, I have vilumes 1 and 2 of Ladies & Gentlemen – and I urge you all to give it a read!

I also had a wander around the other hall in which the festival was being held, and came across my tutor Gareth and his friend, on the “Iron Shod Ape” stall. Having had a rather cheeky sneak preview of his comic with my classmates at University the previous week, I bought myself a copy of his comic book, “The Indian Fighter”. The writing is fantastic, and the artwork is unique and incredibly expressive.

Finally, the icing on the cake: The goodies I bought from the ROMANTICALLY APOCALYPTIC booth. The poster, in the photo below, is rolled up, but it is essentially the image at the top of this article, with the words “Property of Zee Captein” written across it. It is fantastic! Really glossy quality. I’m going to frame it eventually and stick it up on my wall at home.

I also bought the fantastic companion soundtrack CD for the  ROMATICALLY APOCALYPTIC web comic, “O CAPTEIN! MY CAPTEIN!” which was only released recently. I managed to get it signed by Oggy, who assumes the role of  Snippy at conventions and in promotional photoshoots.

The album is a collaboration between various contributing artists to the comic books, and musicians worldwide. It was actually funded through an online fan-funding project, which you can see here: http://www.indiegogo.com/ra-books. It was originally created in order to fund the production of the physical books, but because the funding goal was exceeded, they have been able to start priducing a potential TV series, a soundtrack, and many more projects which are yet to come.

Alestorm “Gotta Drink ’em All” T-shirt

Fantastic news, everyone! I was recently contacted by Elliot Vernon – a lovely friend, and keyboardist for the amazing “Scottish Pirate Metal” band ALESTORM (http://www.alestorm.net/) , and asked to create a parody tshirt for the latest leg of their tour. Already an internationally famous band, I was completely honored to be asked to work with them on this!

In contrast to their current range of awesome merch available, they wanted something light hearted and silly, with a cartoon vibe – so a tshirt sending up “Pokemon” was put in the works! With a correspondance while I was working, for all of about 20 minutes from start to finish, I was able to get each aspect of the drawing perfectly on target.

Elliot gave me a rough initial sketch which he had created himself prior to asking me. He asked for something “Like Snorlax, but, you know, not.” with an alternate colour scheme, and an eye-patch (of course!). All colours were made block, so that they would stick out better on the green tshirts they decided on. The outlines on the creature itsekf were quite thin, done with a 0.8 pigment liner, and the outer line surrounding it was done with a standard marker.

Spring Awakening Collaboration

It has certainly been a bust Summer for me already! During the past two-and-a-half months since I’ve broken up from University, it has been non-stop requests and commission work from various people and businesses. It has been really nice (albeit a little bit hectic) being so in demand! This isall quite new to me – but either way, I am absolutely loving this creative streak, and I’m getting so much portfolio work done because of it.

After I had completed the t-shirt commission for James Ramon Baker (director and starring role in the local production of “Spring Awakening”), and seeing my work debuted in a professional setting, I was asked to contribute more towards this theatre production. James commissioned me to create an individual drawing of each of the actors / characters in the musical. These would go towards being put on an album cover for the cast recording (which is available for purchase now from Hull Truck Theatre).

.

.

As well as being grouped together on the cover, each individual character has been put on individual pages in the inside booklet. In total, there were 16 individual characetrs drawn for the cover (one character had to be re-drawn due to an innacuracy in the costume). Each character was drawn separately, and edited together for the full group image using editing software. They were drawn up and coloured using my standard tools:

  • Mechanical Pencil
  • 0.8 Pigment Ink Fineliner
  • Copic Markers

One of my payments for doing this project for “Spring Awakening”, was free entry to the local production of “Footloose” – which was equally as amazing! Anyway, I’ll keep you all updated on the projects I participate in in the coming weeks! For now, enjoy a preview of the cast recording! If you like it, please don’t hesitate to buy a copy!

End-of-Term Retail Therapy

Today was our last session, of our very first year of Uni, so with tht fact fresh in each of our minds, Alex (http://mrteaandcreamcrumpets.wordpress.com/) and I went on a little spending trip to ease all of the emotional anguish it was bringing us! Haha! We were definitely in need of a form of consolation that only “buying things which we didn’t actually need” would satiate. We were set on going to our local comic book dispensary: “AMAZING FANTASY” (http://www.amazing-fantasy.co.uk/), because every time we go there, we always come out with lots of goodies.

So, we journeyed on over there, and as luck would have it, there were a few comics left over from the annual international “Free Comic Book Day” (http://www.freecomicbookday.com/Home/1/1/27/992). We snapped up a few copies, of course! It would have been rude not to!

A massive character flaw of mine, is that I am very vain when it comes to artwork. If a front cover / inside artwork featured in a comic doesn’t appeal to me or scratch up to a certain standard, I won’t deem it worth my time. Fortunately though, my tastes and opinions are developing and changing all of the time, so I’m sure I’ll come to my senses eventually! I used to hate sketchy, expressive-style artwork, and now: I can’t adore it enough!

First of all, “Adventure Time” by Pendleton Ward, caught my eye. I’ve become a massive fan of the series ever since I started watching it on Cartoon Network. It was actually suggested to me by one of the second year students: Nat (http://zeragothproductions.wordpress.com/) at the beginning of the academic year. I just love the random, ecstatic humor and colourful, wacky character designs.

After seeing the amazing film “The Avengers” (http://marvel.com/avengers_movie) the other week, I am currently in a completely enamoured state with anything to do with “Marvel” (http://marvel.com/). Stan Lee has a genius mind, and it is absolutely fantastic how he has built a veritable empire out of what began as a few doodles – he is a true inspiration! I was especially excited to pick up this “previews catalogue” of Hulk / Iron Man stories, seeing as they were without-a-doubt the absolute best characters throughout that entire film.

Actually, I think that the actor they chose for the role of “The Hulk”Mark Ruffalo – was completely perfect. There was no way that they could have chosen a better actor for the role. I love the cover art for “Marvel Comics”, and I like to use them as aspirational points to reach with my own artwork.

I picked up “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” (http://www.dccomics.com/tags/the-girl-with-the-dragon-tattoo)by Stieg Larsson,  purely because the front cover of the special edition preview intrigued me. I love the female form in works of art. I much prefer it to that of the male form. Anyway, I have to say right now that I as of yet, have not seen either the books or subsequent films. I think that after giving this comic a read, I will look further into rectifying that minor hinderance, haha!

The artwork on this cover is gorgeous. I especially love how the artist on this piece has chosen to stick with semi-realism, but put emphasis on the spine and bone structures. The use of lighting really makes this design choice much more prominent to viewing eyes. This is the sort of route I want to start taking with some of my designs, as I do not currently have a fantastic grasp on the use of lighting to create a mood, etc.

“FUBAR: The Devil’s Dancefloor” (http://fubarpress.com/) is a completely new endeavour to me. I have never known of its existence until today, and to be honest, what grabbed me was the gritty-yet-cartoony art style, the accentuated use of expression on the characters’ faces, and the very earthy colour scheme. That sort of colour scheme just really seems to capture my attention with art lately! Plus, it has zombies in it, and you can’t go wrong with zombies!

The next thing to catch my eye in the shop, is actually a piece of merchandising which I have had my eye on for months. Every trip that I have had to this shop has resulted in me wanting to buy this “Johnny the Homicidal Maniac / JTHM” tshirt, by Jhonen Vasquez (http://www.questionsleep.com/) – and finally, today, I caved in and bought it. I was even more excited that it was in my size! (Nothing ever usually fits me!) Also, I think that the artwork is bloody brilliant – so erratic! This is a perfect example of scratchy looking artwork which I find appealing.

I saw this absolute gem hidden amongst the art book section of the shop, and jumped for joy when I found it. In fact, that is probably my favorite section of the shop, and if I wasn’t so bad with saving up money, I would have invested in so many more books and guides. “The Goblins of Labyrinth” by illustrator Brian Froud (http://www.worldoffroud.com/), is exquisite. It documents every single character and race within the narrative of “The Labyrinth”, with accompanying notes and character bios.

It shows a lovely mixture of sketches, concept art, notation, ink, and finished pieces. It is an utter treat to read this book and marvel at the wonderful conceptual designs by this man – and you can only admire his absolute dedication to the creation of each character, with each of their unique personalities and traits. One thing I love the most about his designs, is that he does not have a set physicality to any of his critters, and they all look completely different.
